Description

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide (a chain of seven amino acids) developed in Russia during the 1980s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Structurally, it is derived from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10) combined with a tripeptide sequence (Pro-Gly-Pro) at its C-terminus. This structural modification extends its enzymatic stability and biological half-life, allowing it to act directly within the central nervous system. In Russia, Semax is approved as a prescription drug—most commonly administered via a nasal spray—for acute ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attacks, optic nerve disease, and cognitive recovery following traumatic brain injury.
